Week 11: "What is learning?" and "How can learning be best effectuated by a teacher/trainer?"
This weeks learning theory connected with something near and dear to me, and in a broader sense, to my field of teaching. In seminary, we always want the students to get more out of the scriptures than just content. Its nice for them to understand the stories, but its critical that they understand the context, or how to move their content based learning away from just inert knowledge. We, as seminary teachers, try to show them the principles and doctrines contained in the scriptures and then help them see that those same truths can and should be applied to their own personal situations. Ahh, the joys of teaching!

Hey Justin,
ReplyDeleteI think you're right on about what it is you said. In terms of religion and context, if there is anything that is worth learning for life, it is the concepts and contexts that you are teaching from. I say that because I still remember what it was my seminary taught me in the 9th grade. The way he brought the scriptures and the contet to life is still as vivid as it was 15 years ago. And what is cool is that after having had him as a teaher, I had the opportunity to have his daughter in one of my classes. I felt a lot of responsibility there because I wanted to give something back. Any way, if I told you this story while up in Logan, my apologies that you had to hear the story again.
Derek
I hope we can take the material we are teaching and help the students apply it somewhere else or what is the point.
